Most business owners will only sell one business in their lifetime. The ones who achieve the best outcome started preparing long before they decided to sell.

I work with SME owners who want to build businesses that are worth more, work better, and give them genuine options, whether that’s growth, succession, stepping back, or an eventual sale.

My focus is exit preparation, not helping owners sell their business, but helping them make it worth selling. There’s a significant difference.

A business that depends entirely on its owner, lacks documented systems, or can’t survive due diligence scrutiny will rarely achieve its full value. Address those things, though, and something useful happens: the business doesn’t just become more saleable, it becomes more profitable, more resilient, and easier to run.

  • The systems that make a business saleable also make it more profitable.
  • The leadership structures that reduce owner dependency also create more freedom for the owner.
  • The governance that gives buyers confidence also improves decision-making and performance.

Building a sale-ready business and building a better business are, in most cases, the same process.

What I bring is a willingness to have honest conversations that others avoid. Clients tell me I see things in their business they’ve stopped seeing themselves, sometimes that means spotting a hidden profit opportunity, sometimes it means telling an owner that the common denominator in their problems is themselves. That second conversation is harder to have. Done well, it’s also the most valuable.

I’ve built and exited businesses myself, so I understand what owners are actually facing, not just the financial and structural questions, but the personal ones. Most of my work comes through referrals, and clients consistently describe the experience as having made a difference both professionally and personally.

I hold a Company Director qualification, which shapes how I think about governance and risk in the businesses I work with. Outside Prime Strategies, I’m based in Taupo with my wife Barb, we have four adult children and seven grandchildren, and when I’m not working I enjoy travel, motor racing, and riding my Harley.

If you’re a business owner in this region and getting ready to sell, whether that’s next year or five years away, is on your mind, I’d like to talk.
