The ACT was carved from New South Wales and established as Australia’s federal territory in 1908; its purpose-built capital city, Canberra, was selected as a compromise between Sydney and Melbourne.   Since the first Federal Parliament convened in Canberra in 1927, public administration and government institutions have driven the territory’s economy.

As of 2025 the population of Canberra is estimated at 482,980. The city has steadily grown, supported by stable employment anchored in public service, education, health, defence, and professional services.

Economically, the ACT ranks among Australia’s most service-oriented regions: about 75% of economic activity comes from services, especially public administration, education, research, and related sectors, while agriculture, mining and manufacturing have minimal share.  Tourism added strength recently: in 2024-25 Canberra welcomed around 5.2 million visitors, contributing to a ~3.7 b GDP from tourism and associated service industries.

High-Opportunity Sectors for 2026–2030 (SME-Friendly)

Gov-service support & consultancy
With the federal government as anchor employer, demand remains high for legal, policy, IT, security, and compliance consulting, deal for small consultancies and niche firms.

EdTech, training & professional upskilling
ACT’s strong education and research base supports growth in lifelong learning, vocational training, and skills upgrades, good opportunities for boutique training providers.

Health, social care & welfare services
Stable population and government contracts support growth in allied-health, aged care, mental health, and community support, accessible to small providers.

Tech and innovation / start-up services
The presence of major research institutions and initiatives (e.g. innovation networks) makes the region fertile for start-ups, tech consultancies, and specialist IT firms.

Tourism, hospitality & cultural experiences
With growing visitor numbers and national-capital tourism, SMEs can tap into accommodation, guided tours, hospitality, events and creative-services catering to domestic & international tourists.

The economic base remains in government services and public-sector stability, but for 2026 to 2029 small-to-medium enterprises have promising openings in education, health, tech/innovation, consultancy, and tourism, especially where they align with high-skill demand, service quality, and niche or value-added offerings. A great opportunity for SMB business owners across the likes of trades and specific expertise.

What Prime Stategies Clients Say

  • “This was a challenge that you were both up for and up to from my perspective. I genuinely appreciate your time and perspectives that have helped me move forward personally and with the business.

I absolutely acknowledge that it’s a great process and one that does help drive a business forward. The focus on mine and my partners personal goals at the start was primo and the monthly management meetings were good.

Having your weekly agenda, discussion points and action items was very helpful to keep moving forward. Your documented lists were great to review. Your personal integrity and energy is a tonic and your encouragement too has been so very valuable to help me shift from the place I was at.”
