Humans have occupied the Northern Territory for over 60,000 years; Indigenous peoples, ancestors of many contemporary First Nations groups, developed rich cultures shaped by land, rivers, coastlines and trade networks.  European contact began with coastal visits by Dutch and later British in the 17th–19th centuries, but permanent settlement proved difficult until the establishment of a colony at Darwin in 1869.

Over time, remote-area pastoral leases, mining and resource extraction (timber, minerals, petroleum) shaped early NT economy and settlement patterns.

Demographics & Population Trends (2025)

As of March 2025, NT’s estimated resident population reached 263,400, a 1.3% increase over the previous year.  Growth was driven mainly by natural increase (births minus deaths) and overseas migration, while interstate outflows partially offset gains.  Approximately 26% of residents identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, one of the highest proportions among Australian States.

Contemporary Economy & Key Industries

The local economy remains strongly resource driven. Mining, petroleum and resource extraction continue to contribute heavily to exports and Gross State Product (GSP).  Government and community services, construction and infrastructure projects also play major roles, particularly given the Territory’s dispersed population and remote communities.

Tourism, agriculture (especially cattle and pastoralism), and some land-use sectors remain relevant, though resource export volatility and remote-area logistics pose challenges. Recently the government emphasised new major projects and trade investment to sustain growth.

Significance & Economic Outlook

The combination of a young, growing population, high Indigenous representation, and rich natural-resource endowment gives it strong potential, especially for resource exports, infrastructure investment, remote-area services, and Indigenous-led economic development.

However, its small population base, geographic isolation, reliance on commodity cycles and high cost of delivering services create constraints. Economic diversification, stable public investment, and supportive policies will be critical to long-term resilience.
